Searching for scooter rental at Phuket Airport usually means one of two things: you want to ride away from the terminal, or you want a bike waiting at your hotel the moment you check in. Both work with Nicky Scooter Rental — we deliver to Phuket International Airport (HKT) and to every hotel on the island for free — but they are not equally good ideas for every traveller. This guide compares them honestly.
We are based in the Old Town, about an hour south of the airport, and we send bikes north to the terminal most days. The advice below is what we tell customers on WhatsApp before they book, so that nobody stands in the arrivals car park with a 25 kg suitcase wondering where to put it.
The two ways to rent a scooter at Phuket Airport
Option 1: airport pick-up by delivery
We bring the scooter to the airport and hand it over in the public pick-up area outside arrivals. You sign, we check your licence, fit your helmet, take the handover photos together and you ride off.
Good for: travellers with a backpack or one soft bag, people staying in Nai Yang, Mai Khao or Bang Tao, anyone who hates waiting for a taxi queue.
Bad for: anyone with a hard suitcase, families, late-night arrivals when you are tired and the roads are dark and unfamiliar.
Option 2: taxi to the hotel, scooter delivered there
You take a taxi, Grab or hotel shuttle to your accommodation and we deliver the scooter to the lobby at a time you choose — the same day if you land before mid-afternoon, otherwise the next morning.
Good for: everyone with real luggage, first-time riders in Thailand, late arrivals, and anyone staying in Patong, Kata, Karon, Rawai, Chalong or the Old Town where the ride from the airport is 45–70 minutes on a highway.
Bad for: honestly, not much. You pay for one taxi ride and skip the stress of a long, unfamiliar ride right after a flight.
Our recommendation, after years of doing both: most people should pick option 2. The exceptions are backpackers and people staying within 20 minutes of the terminal.
Luggage reality: a scooter and a suitcase do not mix
This is the part people underestimate. A scooter has an under-seat box that fits a helmet or a small bag, a hook for one shopping bag, and nothing else.
| What you are carrying | Ride from the airport? |
|---|---|
| Daypack or 30–40 L backpack worn on your back | Yes |
| One soft duffel under 10 kg (between your feet on a PCX/NMAX) | Yes, carefully, solo only |
| Cabin-size hard suitcase | No |
| Checked suitcase | No |
| Two people plus any luggage | No |
Riding the highway with a suitcase between your knees is dangerous and police will stop you. If your bag will not sit on your back comfortably, take the taxi.
Meeting point at HKT arrivals
Phuket International Airport has two passenger buildings — an international building and a domestic building — and is open 24 hours. Our driver waits in the public pick-up area outside arrivals; when you book we send a pin and a photo of the exact spot, and we confirm by WhatsApp when the driver is in position.
What to send us when you book:
- Flight number — we track delays and move the driver's time without you asking.
- Arrival terminal (international or domestic).
- Mobile number that works on landing — a Thai SIM from the counters in arrivals, or roaming. Without a working phone the airport handover is a guessing game.
Allow about 20 minutes from clearing immigration and collecting bags to riding away: licence check, deposit, photos, helmet fit.
Timing your rental with your flight
- Daytime arrivals (before 16:00): airport pick-up works, and we can also deliver to your hotel the same day.
- Evening arrivals: we still deliver to the airport, but we are open 10:00–19:00 and a late pick-up has to be arranged in advance. For most evening flights we recommend the taxi and a hotel delivery at 10:00 the next morning.
- Departures: we meet you at the departures drop-off with enough time for a 15-minute inspection and deposit refund. Add that to your usual check-in buffer.
Payment at handover is cash, credit card or Alipay. The deposit amount depends on the bike — see the prices page.
Documents and the licence check
The same rule applies at the airport as anywhere else in Thailand: you need a Thai motorcycle licence or an International Driving Permit with the motorcycle category, plus your passport. If you arrive without one of those, we cannot hand over the bike, and a taxi is the only option — read do you need a licence to rent a scooter in Phuket before you fly so there are no surprises in the car park. Our deposit and passport guide explains what we hold and what we do not.
Riding out of the airport: Nai Yang, Mai Khao and the highway south
The airport sits in Mai Khao subdistrict on the north-west coast, with Sirinat National Park wrapped around it. If you are staying nearby, the ride is short and pleasant:
- Nai Yang — the beach village just south of the runway, five minutes away, with a long casuarina-lined beach and the national park headquarters.
- Mai Khao — the quieter stretch north of the airport along Phuket's longest beach, where the big resorts are.
- Nai Thon and Bang Tao — 15–25 minutes south along route 4031 and the coast roads.
Heading to the rest of the island means Thepkasattri Road (route 402), the main highway through Thalang to Phuket Town. It is a dual carriageway with trucks, U-turn lanes and the occasional police checkpoint near the Heroines' Monument — see our note on Phuket police checkpoints. Fine for an experienced rider in daylight, not the ideal first ride in Thailand at night after a long-haul flight. The Phuket Airport location page has delivery times to each area.
Best scooters for an airport pick-up
Because the ride out of the airport involves a highway and, for most destinations, 30–60 km, we recommend the larger automatics rather than a 110 cc runabout:
- Honda PCX 160 — the airport favourite. Stable at highway speed, ABS, a big under-seat box for a daypack and helmet, and comfortable for the hour down to the Old Town or Chalong.
- Yamaha NMAX 155 — the same class with a slightly sportier ride; equally good on route 402.
If you are only going as far as Nai Yang or Bang Tao, a Honda Click 125 is enough. Our scooter size guide explains the trade-offs, and free scooter delivery to Phuket hotels describes the hotel handover if you choose option 2.
Book your airport scooter
Send us your flight number, arrival date, hotel name and whether you are travelling with a backpack or a suitcase, and we will tell you straight which option suits you and confirm the bike. Delivery to Phuket Airport and to any hotel on the island is free; message us through the contact page or walk in at 107 Phuket Road in the Old Town, open 10:00–19:00 every day.
