Honda ADV 160 rental in Phuket: built for the rough lanes

A Honda ADV 160 rental in Phuket is for the days when the map says beach but the road turns to broken concrete, then gravel, then a rutted dirt lane. The ADV 160 is a PCX underneath, with the same 156.93 cc eSP+ engine, but Honda raised it onto long-travel suspension with 165 mm of ground clearance, so speed bumps, potholes on Nanai Road and the track down to Ao Sane stop being obstacles.

It has front ABS and Honda Selectable Torque Control, which is the feature you will appreciate most: when the rear tyre spins on loose gravel or a wet patch of concrete, the system trims power before the bike steps out. The adjustable windscreen and upright riding position keep you fresh on the ring road, and the 8.1-litre tank at roughly 45 km per litre means you can wander all day without planning around petrol stations.

On the normal tourist roads it is as capable as any 160: Patong Hill, the Kata–Karon viewpoint climb and the Big Buddha road are all easy with a passenger. The 780 mm seat is on the tall side, so shorter riders should try it before committing to a long rental.

Who it suits, and who should choose something else

If your itinerary includes Laem Sing, the Layan headland, the back lanes behind Nai Harn or the rough sois around Soi Ta-iad, this is the bike. If you will stay on paved roads and would rather have the larger boot and plusher seat, the Honda PCX 160 is the better buy at a lower rate. If you want the same adventure idea with highway pace for trips over the Sarasin Bridge, look at the Honda ADV 350. Our guide to choosing a scooter size for Phuket helps you decide whether 160 cc is enough.

What's included

Two helmets, a phone holder and free delivery to any hotel, villa or the airport are included. The deposit is refundable on return. Thai law requires a Thai motorcycle licence or an International Driving Permit that covers motorcycles; checkpoints on the main roads do check, so read our page on Phuket police checkpoints and helmet fines. We are open 10:00–19:00 daily and take cash, credit card and Alipay.

Best areas for the ADV 160

We recommend it first for scooter rental in Rawai, the gateway to Nai Harn, Ao Sane and the Windmill Viewpoint tracks, and for Kata, where the roads to Kata Noi and the viewpoint reward a bike with proper suspension.

Frequently asked questions

Can the ADV 160 go off-road in Phuket?

It is built for gravel tracks, broken concrete sois and hard-packed dirt lanes, which is exactly what the roads to the quieter beaches look like. It is not a dirt bike, so keep it off deep sand and single-track.

Is the ADV 160 comfortable with a passenger?

Yes. The seat is long and the upright position leaves the passenger plenty of room, and the suspension copes with two adults on rough surfaces far better than a normal scooter.

ADV 160 or PCX 160: which is better for Phuket?

Same engine, different job. The PCX has the bigger boot and the plusher seat for paved roads; the ADV has the clearance and suspension for the lanes beyond them. If your plans are all tarmac, save money with the PCX.

Which roads and beaches is the ADV 160 made for?

The track from Nai Harn to Ao Sane, the lane down to Laem Sing, the Layan headland, the Windmill Viewpoint back roads and the pot-holed sois around Soi Ta-iad. On normal roads it handles Patong Hill and the Big Buddha climb like any other 160.

Which licence do I need for the ADV 160?

Thai law requires a Thai motorcycle licence or an International Driving Permit that covers motorcycles. Bring the physical document to the handover.
