No-Passport Motorbike Rental in Phuket: Deposit Explained

You should never leave your passport with a Phuket rental shop. We take a passport copy, your licence and a refundable cash deposit instead. Here is why, and how it works.

"Can I rent a motorbike in Phuket with no passport?" is one of the most common messages we get, and it usually means one of two things. Either the traveller has read that shops here hold passports as deposit and wants to avoid that, or they've left the passport in the hotel safe and want to know if a copy is enough.

Both have the same answer at our scooter rental in Phuket Old Town: we never keep your passport. We take a copy, we check your licence, we hold a refundable cash deposit, and you ride off with your passport in your bag where it belongs. This guide explains why that's the right way around, and what to do if another shop asks for the original.

Why you should never leave your passport with a rental shop

It's your ID on the road

Thai police can ask any foreigner for identification. GOV.UK's travel advice for Thailand says a copy of the passport photo page is usually accepted at the roadside, but that you may have to produce the original at a police station within 24 hours. If the original is sitting in a drawer in a rental shop in Karon and you're stopped in Chalong, that becomes a problem fast.

The Royal Thai Embassy in London goes further for drivers: when asked, you need to show your international driving permit together with your passport and national licence. The passport is part of your driving paperwork here.

Embassies tell you not to

The UK government's advice is explicit: do not leave your passport with a rental business as a guarantee, because they may keep it over claimed damage. We've seen that scenario play out from the other side of the counter. A traveller comes to us for a second bike because their first shop is holding their passport over a scratch, and they fly in two days.

You can't replace it in Phuket

If you lose access to your passport because a shop refuses to return it, you're looking at a trip to your embassy or consulate in Bangkok, a police report, and probably a missed flight. No scooter rental is worth that.

It shifts all the power to the shop

A shop holding your passport can name any figure for "damage" and you have little choice but to pay. A shop holding a cash deposit has to justify the deduction against photos you both took at handover. The deposit model keeps both sides honest.

What we take instead

At handover, whether at our shop at 107 Phuket Road or at your hotel, we need three things:

  1. A copy of your passport photo page. We photograph it or you send it on WhatsApp beforehand. The original stays with you.
  2. Your licence. Thai law requires a Thai motorcycle licence or an International Driving Permit with the motorcycle category, carried with your home licence. We check the motorcycle page of the IDP and take a copy. No licence, no bike; see do you need a licence to rent a scooter in Phuket for the full picture.
  3. A refundable cash deposit. The amount depends on the bike, from the small Honda Scoopy 110 and Click 125 up to the 350cc maxi scooters such as the Forza 350. The exact figure for each model is on the price page.

Payment for the rental itself is by cash, credit card or Alipay. The deposit is cash so we can hand it straight back at return without card-refund delays.

Scooter rental Phuket deposit: how it works

At handover

We walk around the bike together and photograph every panel, the mirrors, the exhaust, the wheels and the dashboard showing mileage and fuel. You get the photos on WhatsApp so you have your own copy. The deposit and the contract are signed off at the same time.

While you ride

The deposit is simply held. It is not a pre-payment, not a fee, and not deducted for normal wear. Rain, dust, a muddy footboard from the road to Big Buddha: all fine.

At return

We check the bike against the handover photos. Same condition, same fuel level, deposit back in full in cash. If there is new damage, we show you the garage quote and deduct the repair cost from the deposit, and you keep the rest. If you've lost a key or a helmet, we charge the replacement cost. Nothing is charged that you can't see on paper.

"Bike rental Phuket no deposit": is it real?

You'll see shops advertising "no deposit" rental. In practice it means one of three things:

  • They hold your passport instead. That's the trade we've just described, and it is worse for you.
  • They pre-authorise a large amount on your card. This can be a deposit by another name, often bigger than cash, and slower to release.
  • The bike isn't worth protecting. Old, uninsured, unregistered bikes with no plate are offered without deposit because the shop has little to lose. GOV.UK notes such bikes cannot be used legally on a public road, and you're the one riding them.

A refundable cash deposit on a registered, insured, maintained bike is the honest version. The 2026 price list shows the deposit next to every rate so nothing is a surprise.

What the deposit does and doesn't cover

The deposit covers damage to our bike. It does not cover you. Compulsory Thai motor insurance (Por Ror Bor) on the bike pays limited medical costs for people injured in an accident; it does not pay for the bike, for other vehicles, or for anything your travel insurance would normally handle. Read scooter rental in Phuket with insurance before you ride, and make sure your travel policy covers motorcycles with the licence you hold.

Practical tips for your documents

  • Carry the originals of your licence and IDP and a copy of your passport photo page while riding. Keep the passport itself in the hotel safe.
  • Photograph everything before you fly: passport, licence, IDP, travel insurance card. Store them in cloud storage you can open from a borrowed phone.
  • Send us the copies on WhatsApp before delivery and the handover at your hotel takes five minutes. This matters most for airport pickups, where you want to be riding, not photocopying.
  • Check the bike's tax sticker and plate at handover. If a shop can't show a current tax disc, walk away regardless of what deposit they ask.

Where we deliver

We bring the bike to you anywhere on the island: Patong, Kata, Karon, Rawai, Chalong, Kamala, Bang Tao, Kathu, Phuket Airport and of course around Phuket Old Town where the shop is. The same document check and deposit apply wherever we meet.

Ready to book without handing over your passport? Message us on WhatsApp through the contact page with your dates, hotel and the bike you'd like, send the passport copy and licence photo, and we'll confirm the deposit amount and delivery time.

Frequently asked questions

Can I rent a motorbike in Phuket without leaving my passport?

Yes, and you should. We keep a copy of your passport photo page plus your licence or IDP, and hold a refundable cash deposit. You keep the original passport with you at all times.

Is there a scooter rental in Phuket with no deposit?

Not an honest one. A deposit is how a shop covers damage without holding your passport hostage. Ours is refundable cash, from ฿2,000 on a small scooter; the exact amount per bike is on the price page.

What documents do I need to rent a scooter?

Your home driving licence with motorcycle category plus an International Driving Permit (or a Thai motorcycle licence), and your passport so we can take a copy. That's all.

When do I get the deposit back?

At return, in cash, as soon as we've checked the bike against the handover photos. If there is no new damage and the fuel level matches, the full amount goes back in your hand.

Why do some Phuket shops ask for the passport?

Because it is a cheap way to guarantee you come back and pay for any damage they claim. It is also against the advice of every major embassy, leaves you without ID on the road, and gives the shop leverage in a dispute.
